Students from both Fox and Seckman High School will represent the District in a region-wide educational summit on race and diversity.

{November 15, 2016} SAINT LOUIS, MO

Gateway2Change will be holding their second Student Summit on Race of the 2016-17 school year Thursday, November 17 at Emerson World Headquarters (8000 West Florissant Avenue) from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.

During this summit, student leaders will be joined by representatives from local businesses and organizations who will present real-world challenges they are facing in the areas of social and cultural difference, diversity and equity. Students will learn problem-solving methods that can be utilized to create solutions to these challenges. Local businesses and organizations participating in the summit include 1st Financial Credit Union, Build-A-Bear, Children’s Miracle Network, Edward Jones, Emerson, Monsanto and Mayor Slay’s office.

Students have been paired with a sibling school and over the next few months they will meet and collaborate on solutions for solving the real-world challenge. These plans will be presented to business leaders at the final summit on March 10, 2017.

The Student Summits on Race are being led by two nationally recognized speakers, Dr. Terrell Strayhorn from Ohio State University and Mr. Joe Beckman, a national youth motivator. Dr. Strayhorn and Mr. Beckman are leading more than 350 high school students representing 38 area high schools in their efforts to become leaders for positive change in their community.

In addition to Dr. Strayhorn and Joe Beckman, Dr. Charles Pearson, Superintendent for the Normandy Schools Collaborative, will address the group during this summit.

Gateway2Change was created after the tragic events unfolded in Ferguson as a unique approach to help young people have courageous conversations about the racial divide in St. Louis and create a plan to affect positive change. CharacterPlus, a resource of  EducationPlus, is leading the efforts to coordinate the Gateway2Change movement.

Gateway2Change Student Summits on Race are supported in part by Emerson. For more information visit www.g2cplus.org or contact Christine McDonald, EducationPlus Director of Communications, at 314.692.1233 or cmcdonald@edplus.org.
