The meeting began with a video highlighting Scott Reed, a bus driver for the district. The video is the first in a series meant to highlight various aspects of the district and the staff that keeps everything running. These informative videos will provide the Board as well as the community a closer look at some of the aspects of the district that are not seen on a regular basis. To open the public comments portion of the meeting, Dr. Brent Underwood was present to provide an update on the continuing search for a new Fox C-6 superintendent. Dr. Underwood described the formation of a committee that was developed to offer feedback on the final applicants. The committee features members of staff, administration, the community, and two high school juniors. Together, these individuals will give their perspectives on the candidates for superintendent during the final interviewing process. Dr. Underwood has set a timeline for late November for a decision to be put forth to the Board of Education.
Student Council representatives from both high schools were on hand to update the board on their activities. Both groups had successful Homecoming dances and reported an increase in school spirit. Seckman Student Council was elected Secretary of the Gateway District of the Missouri Association of Student Councils and will help with the duties of the yearly convention hosted by that organization.
Also present at the meeting was Dr. Thomas J. Loughrey from the University of Missouri, St. Louis. Dr. Loughrey, the executive director of the Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (MOAHPERD), congratulated the district for its performance in the annual “Jump Rope for Heart” program which raises money and awareness for the American Heart Association. Rockport Heights Elementary was first in the state in this program and with all eleven elementary schools participating, the Fox C-6 District was second overall in the state of Missouri. Dr. Loughrey also recognized Mr. John Ponzar of Guffey Elementary, who is the president elect of MOAHPERD and will help organize the annual convention for the organization.
The board members then had the opportunity to visit tables and discuss individual building improvement plans with administrators from throughout the district. Each building is implementing specific strategies to increase student success and last night’s meeting allowed the board to ask specific questions related to those plans.
